One recent trend in the antique and collectibles world worth nothing has been the renewed interest in moonshine jugs and the strong collector’s market growing around their collection. Moonshine jugs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and collectors are interested in the originals and the older antique models, not new replicas. This means a wide variation in shape and sizes, in addition to having many jugs which were hand made using local pottery methods to come up with enough moonshine jugs to take what a large still could fill. These have been made before, during, and after Prohibition and the ability to date or tie to an area really isn’t as important as being in good condition and obviously older.
This means the market for valuing antique moonshine jugs is pretty wide open, and that can be interesting for collectors who find a huge variety of these jugs throughout the South or lower Midwest regions where bootlegging used to be (and some areas still is) not only a big business, but also a way of life. Very unique small designs can be just as valuable and desirable as the very large old school designs set to hold a full gallon. So much of demand depends on the age, quality of work, and then what buyers at any given auction or sale personally prefer.
Finding antiques have become far more popular since shows like “Antique Roadshow,” “Pawn Stars,” and “American Pickers” have come onto the air. This is another example of how pursuing another interest can result in finding a recreation or hobby which you might not have thought about before, but becomes very profitable even as you enjoy your new habit of doing something as opposed to just sitting back and going through the same old motions once again.
